Sustainable Purchasing

We have developed a Sustainable Purchasing policy to inform our decisions about the suppliers we choose and the organisations we work with, keeping them as ethical and local as possible.

Read on to find out more…

  • We source North East suppliers and contractors whenever we can to sustain the local economy and reduce the need to transport goods and services long distance.
  • Woodhorn Museum’s Café uses recyclable or compostable takeaway cups and containers. At Berwick Museum and Art Gallery and Hexham Old Gaol we use paper cups for Refill water dispensers. The large water bottles are returned and refilled by the manufacturer.
  • The Winding House Café is proud to be certified by Produced in Northumberland as a supporter of local Northumberland food and drink producers, and we use Doddington Cheese and dairy products, Glenton’s Bakery bread, and Rington’s tea and coffee, among other local companies.
  • The café has also acheived Kids in Museums Café Standard – ensuring young people are catered for in museum cafés, but also ensuring the cafés are environmentally responsible.
  • We ask contractors, commissions and suppliers to follow our own guidance such as not using plastic takeaway containers, or disposable plastic cutlery, and that items are correctly recycled etc. This is written into our contracts with them, and we are working towards creating a ‘Green Rider’ of requirements for all contracts with us.
  • We choose and promote local suppliers in our shops who source their products organically, sustainably and ethically. This includes toys made from sustainably forested wood, and where plastic is used we look to purchase items in recycled or bio plastic.
  • Our Learning team use recycled paper for art workshops, and repurpose cardboard boxes and other materials for STEM activities.
  • We use environmentally friendly and refillable cleaning and hygiene products, and buy in bulk wherever possible to minimise the use of plastic bottles.
