STEM Person of the Week

STEM Person of the Week is a five week teacher led STEM engagement activity developed to target primary school age pupils. It aims to combat the perceived stereotypes of science and scientists by using counter-stereotypical character attributes through diverse sets of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) role models. Each set of resources includes profiles of five people who have been carefully chosen to reflect the diversity within STEM and the characteristics needed to do their jobs.

These resources have been created as part of the Our Past, Your Future project and the Union Chain Bridge project.

We recommend running this as a whole school activity once a year, and it is designed to easily fit into weekly planning taking as little as 10 minutes each week to run.

Resources for each set can be downloaded below and along with a presentation which includes staff training information and slides you can use in class, and a set of A6 postcards which can be printed for your students.

Our Past, Your Future was an ambitious project aimed at using local STEM heritage and contemporary STEM in our region to instil pride in our local communities, break down stereotypes around STEM and broaden awareness of STEM careers. You can find out more about the project here: https://museumsnorthumberland.org.uk/project/our-past-your-future/

The Union Chain Bridge (UCB) project was an ambitious project involving the conservation of the internationally significant historic Union Chain Bridge near Berwick upon Tweed, the preservation of its intangible heritage and an extensive programme of public engagement. you can find out more about the project here: https://museumsnorthumberland.org.uk/project/union-chain-bridge-project/

These resources are based on the STEM Person of the Week activity developed by NUSTEM, an education research group at Northumbria University. For background information and the research behind these resources please visit www.nustem.uk/stem-person-of-the-week
