Heritage Open Days 2023

04/09/2023

Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival of history and culture. Running every September, the festival offers free access to heritage events and activities across England. Our museums will be free admission on the following dates this month. No need to pre-book, just come along and explore Northumberland’s heritage.

Woodhorn Museum | Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th September, 10am – 4pm
Come and explore Northumberland’s coal mining heritage and enjoy a day out at Woodhorn Museum. On Saturday 9th September, you can meet the Northumbria Lacemakers – a group promoting lacemaking throughout the North East of England. They will be here all day giving lacemaking demonstrations and you can even have a go yourself!

Hexham Old Gaol | Saturday 9th, Sunday 10th, Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th September, 10am – 4pm
Visit England’s oldest gaol and relive important moments from our region’s turbulent past.
You can also book a free place on a tour of the House of Correction. Join us to discover this buildings interesting (and rather grim) history. Tours will take place at 2.30pm but must be booked in advance.

Berwick Museum and Art Gallery | Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th September, 10am – 4pm
Admission to the Berwick Barracks will be free for everyone on this weekend. Discover the characters, nooks and crannies of old Berwick. Learn about Berwick in the Middle Ages and then enjoy the beautiful masterpieces from the magnificent Berwick Burrell Collection.
