Marking the 40th anniversary of the 1984 – 85 Miners’ Strikes

05/03/2024

6th March 2024 marks forty years since the beginning of the year-long Miners’ Strike of 1984-85.

Throughout the year we will be introducing visitors to some of the objects in the collection that tell the stories of those men and women involved and the impact it had on their lives.

Visitors can also:

Join one of the Daily Spotlight Tours – On this short tour we will pick out some of the objects on display and key themes of the Miners’ Strike. Suitable for all ages, no need to pre-book and included with your Annual Pass admission. Find out more about the Strike Spotlight Tour

Share your Experience – Our Memory Wall in Coal Town offers a space for visitors to share their own stories about the 1984 – 85 Miners’ Strike.

Strike 40 Schools Programme – Our new programme of workshops for Upper KS2 and kS3 pupils looks at mining conditions, nationalisation and the effect of the strike on communities like Ashington. Find out more about the Schools Learning Programme
