Our Collections / Costume and Textiles

Passion for fashion? Don’t miss stunning examples from across the centuries

Check out our one of a kind pieces including domestic and military wear.

Ranging from the ancient world to 20th Century, our textiles contain stylish examples worn throughout key moments in history.

Our costume pieces follow the fashions for births, marriages and deaths – including christening gowns, stunning Edwardian and Victorian wedding dresses and sombre but stylish mourning clothes.

Check out our range of costumes on display including 18th Century waistcoats, red military jackets with gold embroidery and shepherd’s plaid – often worn by Northumbrian pipers.

Did you know we have amazing Medieval shoes as part of our collection which were found at a local dig? The shoes are used in our educational workshops at Berwick Museum and Art Gallery.

We’re as proud of our 30s and 40s handbags as our delicate Egyptian beads. Look at the finer details of each piece, a world away from today’s modern disposable fashion.

Our textiles also include iconic regional marching banners, proggy mats, and decorative velvet bag covers.

Remember there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Which will be your favourite?
