Jackie Milburn began his career in football on his eighth birthday when his parents bought him a pair of football boots, after that “football dominated his life”. Milburn was inspired to attend the trials for Newcastle United prior to the 1943-44 season, and after seeing his performance, Newcastle United manager Stan Seymour “asked him to sign on the spot”. Milburn’s official registration as a Newcastle United player on a part time basis came on the 23rd of August 1938. In 1943 Milburn scored his first goal for Newcastle United against Bradford City and in the same year he was transferred to Woodhorn colliery as a fitter.
