Brass Bands

Brass bands have always been an integral part of the Miners’ Picnic. This year, we wanted to celebate the much loved performances by our local brass bands through a digital platform.

Brass bands are a traditional part of mining communities and an important part of the annual Miners’ Picnic.

Through our virtual picnic celebrations we showcase the music of the four brass bands from South East Northumberland – Ashington Colliery Band, Bedlington Community Brass Band, Ellington Colliery Band and Jayess Newbiggin Brass Band.

Ashington Colliery Band

Ashington Colliery Brass Band is probably the most "heard" Brass Band in the UK.

Back in 1973, now world-famous Director Ridley Scott, made a TV advert for Hovis, the one of a boy pushing his bike to the top of hill to make his bread delivery, the Band playing on that advert is none other than Ashington Colliery Band.
