Explore the history of the Northumberland Miners' Picnic, with a range of content from the Museums Northumberland collections.

Objects in Focus

White porcelain statuette, made in one piece. The miners deputy has lost his outstretched arm holding the safety lamp. His remaining arm rests on a pick axe. The figure stands on a large plinth decorated with a laurel wreath, near the base of the plinth is a black and white image of a colliery, presumably Woodhorn Colliery, showing a large chimney, two heapsteads and pit wheels, and some ancillary buildings enclosed within a fence in the foreground.

Black and white photograph. An unknown colliery band featuring a small ensemble of players. Musicians do not wear uniforms expect for simples matching caps. They are dressed in their best formal attire.

Bands

Brass bands have always been an integral part of the Miners’ Picnic.
Woodhorn Colliery banner. Red silk with gold fringing. Obverse view; three yellow applique patches with blue lettering reads 'Woodhorn Branch' 'Northumberland Area' 'National Union of Mineworkers' above a central image roundel between the dates '1975' and '1925'. The roundel is divided into six pictures, from clockwise: above ground scene of a colliery, presumably Woodhorn; underground scene depicting hewers at the coal face overlaid with the words 'Strike and Unemployment' in a fireburst; the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben; unidentified industrial buildings; an underground loco carrying men ready for work; a schematic diagram showing coal seams. Beneath the roundel, words within a scroll read 'A Century of Coal'.

Banners

Traditionally, colliery branch banners were marched on picnic day in a parade.
