Mik Critchlow

We are really pleased that Mik Critchlow has generously shared these images of past Northumberland Miners' Picnics as part of our digital Picnic celebration this year.

Image: Brass Band Northumberland Miners' Picnic 1981

In 1977, after seeing an exhibition of the ‘Pitmen Painters’ work, Mik embarked on a long term photography project documenting his home town of Ashington. The photographs featured here were taken by Mik at various Miners’ Picnic between the late 1970’s and early 1990’s. In these photographs you can see aspects of the Picnic that remain part of the event today alongside activities and traditions that have been lost along the way.

We are currently working with Mik to develop a new exhibition of his work which is due to be presented at Woodhorn Museum in late 2021. You can find out more about Mik’s work and see more of his photography by visiting his website here:  https://www.mikcritchlow.com
