Leek growing was popular amongst miners and growing huge leeks has been part of the local heritage for 150 years as miners took to the challenge as a break from life underground and as a way of feeding their families. The first recorded leek show in the North East was in Swarland, Northumberland in 1846 with each show conduced with its own rules and regulations.

Although leek shows have declined in recent years, during the heyday of the events the high end prizes were very sought after. The last World Leek Growing Championship was held in Ashington, Northumberland in 2008.
