Northumberland Open 2024: Northumberland Now
About the Northumberland Open:
“Fantastic exhibition. Beautiful selection of work. Wonderfully represents the Arts in Northumberland.” Open Exhibition 2023 Visitor Feedback
Housed in Woodhorn Museum’s stunning Workshop Galleries, the annual Northumberland Open is the largest exhibition of its type in Northumberland. The exhibition attracts submissions from artists from across Northumberland and beyond. Works are selected for exhibition by a professional panel of artists and curators who also selected an Overall Winner and Highly Commended artists to be awarded prizes. During the exhibition run, thousands of visitors vote for the ‘People’s Choice’ award which is announced at the end of the exhibition.
Artist information and how to register:
The theme for our 2024 Open Exhibition is ‘Northumberland Now’ and is inspired by the work of the Ashington Group of Artists (also known as the Pitmen Painters). 2024 will be the 90th anniversary of the formation of the Ashington Group in 1934, and the Northumberland Open will be the start of a year-long programme of exhibitions and events celebrating their legacy. The Ashington Group made art about their everyday lives, work, community and environment in Northumberland, so we are inviting artists to submit work that reflects life in Northumberland today. As ever, this theme is open to the interpretation of the individual artist.
Artists are welcome to submit up to three artworks for exhibition for a (non-refundable) fee of £10 per artwork. Submission is in-person only and takes place over 2 days in January 2024 (Friday 19th & Saturday 20th). Exact submission information including times will be provided to registered artists nearer the time.
If you would like to receive more information about submitting work to the Northumberland Open 2024, please register your interest by e-mailing wow@museumsnorthumberland.org.uk. The deadline for registration is Friday 8th December 2023. After registration closes, you will be e-mailed full information about the submission process and 2024 exhibition.
