Christmas Grotto

Special event

Sat 19th December – Thu 24th December, Woodhorn Museum

Various timeslots available, pre-booking via website only. SOLD OUT Child £7.50 to include a gift, free accompanying adults (all adults must have a valid Annual Pass)

Families are invited to come along to Woodhorn Museum to meet Father Christmas and find out what you should be leaving for him and the Reindeers on Christmas Eve.

2020 has been a challenge for everyone and Father Christmas is no different! But you will be pleased to hear that Coronavirus didn’t reach The North Pole and we have followed all of the Covid-secure guidelines to keep you and Father Christmas as safe as possible ahead of the big day.

You can book a 10-minute session with Father Christmas for groups of up to 6 people from the same household or support bubble. The ticket price is £7.50 per child and free to adults (but all adults must have a valid Annual Pass to get admission to Woodhorn).

The ticket price includes:

  • A 10-minute session with Father Christmas
  • An all important photo opportunity – socially distanced of course and you will have to take the photo yourselves this year
  • An age-relevant gift

As well as visiting the Christmas Grotto in the workshop galleries, why not also enjoy our Festive Trail around the museum.

Covid-19 didn’t reach the North Pole, so we are delighted to welcome Father Christmas to Woodhorn Museum this year. We have had to make some changes to this years’ experience, but we hope you will still have an enjoyable and memorable time with your family.

The Christmas Grotto will be in the Workshop Galleries on the following dates:

  • Saturday 19 December
  • Sunday 20 December
  • Monday 21 December
  • Tuesday 22 December
  • Wednesday 23 December
  • Thursday 24 December

Tickets are available for a 10 minute time slot from 10.00am – 4.45pm (3.45pm on Christmas Eve). We have allowed five minutes between each visit to clean surfaces and keep visitors (and Father Christmas!) safe.

It is £7.50 per child to visit Father Christmas in his grotto. Each child will receive a gift from Father Christmas. There is no additional charge for accompanying adults to visit the Christmas Grotto (but all accompanying adults must be from the same household or support bubble and book a free ticket at the same time as booking your child tickets).

All accompanying adults must have a valid Annual Pass to visit Woodhorn Museum. You can find more information and buy your Annual Pass here.

In line with Covid-19 guidelines, tickets are only available to be booked with people from your immediate household (or support bubble) up to a maximum of six people per timeslot.

You will need to book and pay for a ticket for each child, who will receive a gift from Father Christmas, plus a ticket for accompanying adult(s). There is no additional charge for accompanying adults to visit the Christmas Grotto (but all accompanying adults must book a free ticket at the same time as booking your child tickets) and all accompanying adults must have a valid Annual Pass to visit Woodhorn Museum. You can find more information and buy your Annual Pass here.

Woodhorn Museum’s opening hours are 10am-5pm (4pm on Christmas Eve) but visitors who have booked the 10am timeslot in the Christmas Grotto will be able to gain entry to the museum from 9.30am. We recommend that you make sure you allow at least 20 minutes to arrive at Woodhorn Museum ahead of your booked timeslot with Father Christmas. At busy times, there may be slight wait at The Main Gate on arrival and we advise that you take this into consideration when planning your visit.

Please aim to get to the Workshop Galleries 10 minutes ahead of your booked timeslot in the Grotto to ensure you get the full amount of time to see Father Christmas.

Parking is in the main car park. Make your way directly to the Main Entrance gate.

All adults in the group will need to have a valid Annual Pass. If you haven’t purchased one ahead of your visit, you can buy one on the Main Gate, but allow time to do this.

Children aged 16 and under can visit Woodhorn Museum for free, but you will need to have a copy of your email confirmation to visit the Christmas Grotto.

You will need to show your email booking confirmation to the Customer Hosts in the hut.

Depending on your arrival time, you will be advised to either make your way directly to the Christmas Grotto or can explore Woody’s Winter Trail before your visit to Father Christmas.

Father Christmas will be in the Workshop Galleries. This is the long building to the left of the Main Entrance Gate to Woodhorn Museum.

Yes.

Yes the Workshop Galleries is fully accessible.

We are also offering a small number of relaxed sessions for families who may have additional needs and require a little more time to settle and enjoy the experience.

You will need to purchase a ticket for all children wishing to meet Father Christmas and receive a gift. All children must be accompanied by at least one parent or guardian when visiting Father Christmas.

When booking, you must also select a free adult ticket for accompanying adults or older children who do not want to receive a gift from Father Christmas.

All adults visiting the Grotto must be from the same household or support bubble.

Face coverings must be worn by adults and children over the age of 11 when indoors at Woodhorn Museum unless you are exempt. If you forget to bring a face covering with you, we will have some available in the Workshop Galleries for you to wear (unless you are exempt).

Please arrive at the Workshop Galleries 10 minutes ahead of your booked timeslot. Your name will be checked off the list by one of Father Christmas’ helpers, and you will be asked to wait inside the Workshop Galleries. Please maintain a social distance from other families who will be waiting.

Father Christmas will be sat in his sleigh and there will be seating for your children to talk to him. There will be additional seating for the grown ups too.

Father Christmas will talk to the children, based on the information you provide us when booking and will give them a present.

Parents or Guardians will be able to take photographs and videos. Unfortunately, our staff won’t be able to take photos for you.

Each family will have 10 minutes with Father Christmas and the Grotto will be sanitised between visits.

Yes, but please maintain a social distance from Father Christmas – we want to keep him safe and healthy to be able to deliver the presents on Christmas Eve. We are unable to take photos or videos on your behalf. We would love it if you would share your photos with us on social media.

Families can also explore Woodhorn’s museum grounds and view our colliery heritage buildings. You might even find Woody, a very sparkly little deer who is excited to welcome you back to Woodhorn. If you do spot Woody playing in four of our buildings, you’ll receive a sweet festive treat as a thank you for your visit.

This trail is free of charge and no need to book – you can do it before or after your visit to the Grotto, but don’t forget to get back to the Workshop Galleries in plenty of time for your booked time slot.

The Café will be open for takeaway drinks and snacks. Access will be via The Pit Yard.

Due to the Covid-19 guidelines, capacity is extremely limited this year and we expect the Christmas Grotto to be sold out.

At the time of booking, please make sure you have selected the correct date and time within the booking calendar. Please take into consideration your availability, and any travel times that may impact on your visit as tickets for the Christmas Grotto are non-refundable.

In the event of a government lockdown which means Woodhorn Museum has to close, a full refund will be provided for this experience.

Please make sure you allow plenty of time to travel to Woodhorn Museum and gain admission to the site. Make sure you have purchased your Adult Annual Passes in advance if you do not already have one.

If you are a few minutes late, we will do everything we can to get you to see Father Christmas within your booked timeslot. We expect the Christmas Grotto to be fully booked. If you miss your timeslot completely, due to the limited capacity, and Covid-19 guidelines, we will not have any flexibility to fit you in to a later timeslot, but will make sure your children receive their gift.

If this does happen, please don’t take your frustration out on our Customer Hosts.

Tickets for the Christmas Grotto are non-refundable (apart from if Woodhorn Museum is forced to close by the Government), but if you or someone in your household is required to self-isolate, you are welcome to transfer your booking to someone you know. Please ensure this is done at least 24 hours in advance of your booking and let us know the details of who will be attending in your place, so we can make sure Father Christmas knows the names of the children he will be meeting instead. If this does happen please email hello@museumsnorthumberland.org.uk with your booking reference or send us a direct message on Facebook.
